The base for our street work is near the train station. The house has two wings: the Casa Luisa day centre and the Casa Robert night centre.
It all began when Moise, our long-time companion, connected us with the concerns of homeless people at the Bucharest train station. There are places where they can find first aid, but they cannot get there – or they are banned from entering.
Fabian Robu started street work in Bucharest. Every day, he goes to the train station and surrounding area with ELIJAH staff. They are often greeted with questions and requests, with hunger, and also with open hearts. These outcasts long for warmth, peace and community. Friendship strengthens them. Fabian listens, reassures, mediates, dresses wounds, takes them to the doctor or hospital. He has found simple accommodation for some of them.
CASA LUISA
At Casa Luisa, people living on the streets find refuge during the day. They are given tea and bread. They can take a shower and warm up on cold winter days. They gather in the chapel to pray. Singing also warms them up, and many requests and concerns are sent up to heaven, along with joy and gratitude. With this strength, some of them may be able to get off the streets after all.
CASA ROBERT
We have set up overnight accommodation at Casa Robert since 2024. Renovation work has begun. Everyone can help with cleaning, painting and assembling beds. Household chores are tackled together: cooking, washing, cleaning, and even planting vegetables in the garden in spring. A colourful community has emerged.
MOISE: MEIN FREUND
In this special graphic novel, Moise tells his moving story as a former street child in Bucharest, accompanied by colourful drawings. Ruth Zenkert, P. Georg Sporschill SJ and Nora Schoeller supported him in 2024 by translating his stories into German and designing the book.
